What is blood urea and elevated blood urea levels causes and managements, most common causes of elevated blood urea levels in clinical practice.
Blood urea - is synthesized by Liver ( in urea cycle ) as a metabolism of Proteins.
Normal range of blood urea is - 7 - 21 mg.
Causes of elevated Blood urea levels -
Renal disorders
Acute kidney injury
High protein in take
Increased protein break down
Volume loss - Burns
Dehydration
Shock
Urinary tract obstruction - stones,prostatic enlargement,carcinoma bladder.
Myocardial infarction ( MI )
Congestive heart failure
Bleeding inside the gastrointestinal tract
Certain drugs.
Liver failure

Symptoms of elevated blood urea levels -
Fatigue
Signs of dehydration - dry skin, sunken eye balls, dry tongue etc.
Hypotension - secondary to volume loss
Signs of renal failure - swelling of both lower limbs, puffiness of face and volume overload state
signs of heart failure - orthopnea, PND,pain abdomen ( right sided),swelling of limbs
Management of elevated blood urea levels -
Depending on the cause for elevated urea levels -
If secondary to volume loss - replace patient with IVF ( Intravenous fluids)
treat the cause for volume loss
If secondary to congestive heart failure - treat with diuretics,Beta blockers and ACE inhibitors.
